Martin E. Mitchell

Mitchell, Martin E., 86, of Springfield went home at 6:35 a.m. Sunday, November 10, 2013 in Springfield Regional Medical Center. He was born in Springfield on September 20, 1927 the son of Joseph and Letitia (Hurst) Mitchell. He was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 30+ years, retiring in 1987. He then worked at Med Trans for 15 years and later was a greeter at Wal Mart. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Union Club, Eagles and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Martin was a simple man who loved his family, animals and the country. In the end he saw horses in the sky and said the white one was his. We told him to jump on and ride and he did. Survivors include his wife of 68 ½ years, Betty L. (Peck); four children, Michealeen (Dewey) Vulgamore, Judith Harmer (Gene Taylor) all of Springfield, David (Tenna) Mitchell of Mechanicsburg and Laura J. (Mark) Brush of Springfield; eight grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and sister, Jane Stafford of Springfield. He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Michael "Bud" Mitchell. The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. David Monjot. His funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens Chapel with Deacon Norm Horstman officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements handled by CONROY FUNERAL HOME.
